This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the ratification of the 26th Amendment, which guarantees 18-year-olds have the right to vote in all US elections, extending the right to vote to a new generation of young voters. Throughout this landmark anniversary, we celebrate the youth vote, while recognizing that barriers facing young people, and particularly college students, have prevented us from fulfilling the full promise of the 26th Amendment.

Though we just finished the November 3 General Election, Wisconsin has important elections upcoming in the spring. With nearly 6,000 offices up for election in the spring, we want to do our best in encouraging folks to step up and be champions for their communities.

All too often these important elected offices are unopposed or left vacant so an unelected appointee fills the office. Voters deserve better, they deserve a choice of who will represent them. That can only happen if local residents step up to take on a leadership role in their communities.

John Muir Chapter of Sierra Club 2020 Awards to LWVABC and Mike Wiggins, Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa

The League of Women Voters of Ashland and Bayfield Counties received the Good Citizen Award from the John Muir Chapter of the Sierra Club.

Joan Elais, who is our Natural Resources Advocacy Committee chair, accepted the award on behalf of our chapter. Joan and her committee have worked endlessly on decommissioning Line 5.
