100 Years ago strong women marched, fought and won the right to vote in our federal elections on August 1920. 100 Years ago The League of Women Voters was born from this struggle on February 1920.
We have a lot to celebrate but still... To this day barriers to voting are being erected nationwide to disenfranchise people based on their socioeconomic status — notably people of color, students, and people with disabilities. Yet all eligible voters should be able to cast a ballot confidently, proudly, and without additional requirements that prevent them from voting. It is clear that the “fight” remains unfinished. And that the work of the League is needed as much now as it was at its founding.
Marching in the Applefest Parade gives us the opportunity to show our presence and continue our work to fight for Democracy and Voting Rights. Join us! Wear white or light colors, or whatever color you like, and march with us. We will make sashes and placards for those interested. The first dozen people to sign up will receive a “Votes for Women”. If you wish to help design and make sashes & placards or, if you need to ride and not walk, please email Mary Hassett Gabrys at mhassettgabrys@gmail.com. By the end of September we will have an idea about where we meet to march, so let us know if you will be part of our Team.
